SPECIAL FRIENDS

The organization known as "Second Chance" is a family operated establishment. The founders and directors of this rescue and exhibit organization is the mother daughter team of Cathy Mulnard & Michelle Mulnard Curtin along with their husbands Doug and Jerry.  They have a small volunteer staff of assistants that help in the rescue and care efforts of the rehabilitation division.

MEET THE TEAM

Mark Zendler, Cathy's brother, sits on the board of directors as well as assist with our fund raising activities and educational exhibits.  While Mark is always willing to lend a hand with most any of our animals he spends most of his time assisting with our Canis lupus (wolf) division.

John and Patty Guagneur, cousins of the Mulnards, are associated with our equine division.  Patty specializes in "special needs" mini horses and ponies.  John is also an all around key player here at second chance and its not unlikely to find him building a barn, fixing a bobcat cage or making repairs to an alligator enclosure.  All of our cages and housing facilities are of zoo standard and quality to ensure the animals safety as well as our staff and the public.  John, Jerry, Doug and Mark all are highly qualified and experienced in dealing with specialized animal housing/enclosures.

18 year-old Monique Mulnard, Doug & Cathy's other daughter, works with many of our little interesting critters.  She is well versed with salamander, newts, geckos, frogs and anything else of that "slimy" nature.

18 year old Jesse Brawley, Michelle's cousin, likes to get his hands dirty helping out in the reptile center. Currently Jessie works with Michelle handling alligators up to 5' long.

Cathy is a retired veterinary technician and former kennel manager.  She has done everything from raising dogs and cats to raising fox and Black Leopards.  With 30 years of dedication to the animal field Cathy has taken her knowledge and experience and is applying it now to rescue, rehabilitation and exhibits.  Cathy is well versed in several areas of animal care but specializes in cats...the very big kind.  Cougars, bobcat, leopard, lynx are all very much up Cathy's isle.

Michelle has been in the animal field for 15 years now, dealing with many types of exotic and wild animals but specializing in wolves, crocodilian and birds of prey. Michelle is a licensed NYS EMT and volunteer firefighter who also teaches CPR and first aid for the American Red Cross and has applied her emergency medical training to the animal field and is currently Class 2 NYS licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Doug Mulnard and Jerry Curtin have inherited MANY jobs, from picking up injured squirrels at local animal hospitals to handling large and dangerous animals to on the spot emergency enclosure preparation.  There's nothing like hearing "Honey the CACC is bring over a 5' foot long alligator or Dear, the SPCA has confiscated an 80lb leopard, can you have the galvanized steel chain link enclosure up and ready by tomorrow.....please"   THANKS.

We have a few other volunteers that pop in and out occasionally to help out but most of the feedings, care and hands on work is done by Michelle and Cathy.

We deal with animals such as squirrels, opossums, turtles, snakes, many types of birds, ducks, bunnies and several other species of wildlife.  We'll rehabilitate groundhogs, hedgehogs and even bullfrogs if we have to.  All of our volunteers and staff members tend to get involved with whatever walks through the doors of our facility.  However, do to our involvement in large animal exhibits people contact us with regard to other animals that tend to be illegally possessed and have been surrendered or confiscated.  In turn everybody here has a special area of handling and expertise.

Our facility is both state and federally licensed.  Our staff is always getting updated on the latest information, techniques, procedures and laws through mandatory continuing education.  We deal with local animal hospitals, the spca, the CACC (City Animal Care and Control, of NYC) and other volunteer rescue/rehab foundations.  It takes a lot of time, hard work, money and organization to be a part of a foundation such as this....but it has to be done to preserve our wildlife.  If you are interested in getting more information on becoming a volunteer or how you can help please do not hesitate to contact us
